API

Drive Slice for Slice from your own code

The one metered task, compare, is available over HTTP. It takes 2 to 5 festive cakes or sweet breads from the person's own shortlist - the page's shelf lines (price, weight, slices, price per slice and per 100 g, whether each fits the budget per cake and the slices needed, the fitting order, the verdict, the pick, the runner-up and the closest), the person's note on each cake, up to 3 wishes and who or what it is for - and returns the verdict, the pick, a headline, 1 comparison row per cake (taste, a mark for each wish, best for, watch out), a note on the pick and a closing line.

The division of labour first: the page does the arithmetic and a fixed rule decides the verdict and the pick; the model fills in the comparison from the person's notes and explains the pick. After a run the page checks that the verdict and the pick follow the rule, that every cake has a row in shelf order with 1 mark per wish, that every number in the prose is on the shelf or in the notes, that word limits hold, and that no ids leak into the prose.

Base URL and the envelope

Every endpoint lives under https://api.skillsafe.ai/v1/app-api, and every response uses one envelope:

{ "ok": true,  "data":  { ... } }
{ "ok": false, "error": { "code": "...", "message": "..." } }

The token is minted for this app (the guest call takes {"slug":"slice-for-slice"}), so no slug header is needed afterwards. Send it as Authorization: Bearer …. The run body is the input object, sent bare.

StatusCodeMeaning
400validation_errorThe body is not a JSON object, or a required field (task, occasion, wishes, shelf, notes) is missing.
401unauthorizedNo token, or a stale one. Mint a guest token or sign in again.
402insufficient_creditsThe balance is under min_credits. Price with /estimate first.
403forbiddenA guest token tried to run: a comparison is metered and needs a personal sign-in.
404not_foundUnknown job id.
429rate_limitedBack off and retry.
5xxserver_errorTransient. Retry with the same Idempotency-Key so a retry never double-bills.

The task field, the input and the verdicts

Every run sends task: compare (the one task is compare); a missing or different one is still answered as compare. Slices come from the box, or 1 per 80 g when left blank; prices per slice and per 100 g are rounded to the cent. A cake fits when it is within the budget per cake and has at least the slices needed. The verdict rule, checked in order: no cake fits, nothing-fits (the closest has the fewest misses, then the lowest price per slice); otherwise 2 or more fit and the 2nd cheapest per slice costs at most 10% more per slice than the cheapest, close-call; otherwise clear-pick. Fitting cakes rank by price per slice, then the heavier, then the one higher on the list.

FieldRequiredWhat it holds
taskyesAlways compare.
occasionyesWho or what the cake is for, up to 100 characters, or none.
wishesyesUp to 3 lines wish 1 | text, or none.
shelfyesThe page's lines: currency: $, budget per cake: 30.00, slices needed: 16, 1 line per cake such as option 1 | name | price 24.00 | 1500 g | 18 slices (given) | 1.33 per slice | 1.60 per 100 g | fits, then fitting order (...), verdict:, pick:, runner-up: and closest:.
notesyes1 line per cake, option 1 | text or option 1 | none.
retry_notenoOnly on the page's single reformat retry.

The reply is one JSON object:

{"task": "compare", "verdict": "clear-pick", "pick": "...", "headline": "...", "rows": [{"option": "...", "taste": "...", "wishes": ["meets"], "best_for": "...", "watch_out": "..."}, ...], "pick_note": "...", "closing": "..."}
FieldWhat it holds
verdictnothing-fits, close-call or clear-pick, copied from the shelf.
pickThe pick's name from the shelf, or empty when nothing fits.
headlineThe verdict in plain words, at most 16 words.
rows1 per cake in shelf order: option (the name), taste (from the note, at most 14 words), wishes (1 of meets, misses, unknown per wish), best_for (at most 10 words) and watch_out (at most 14 words).
pick_noteWhy the pick comes first, or what the closest cake misses, at most 45 words.
closingOne light next step, at most 20 words.

The page then checks the reply (SliceKit.check) and lists any disagreement under "The page's check".

Worked examples - every verdict

These are the four free samples on the page: the exact input the page sends and the reply that replays for free.

Build the input yourself

Load the engine in node (global.window = global; require("./slicekit.js")), then:

const K = SliceKit;
const built = K.buildInput(K.form({ occasion: "a winter picnic", currency: "$", budget: 20, need: 8, wishes: ["no peel"],
  options: [{ name: "Tall panettone", price: 18, grams: 1000, slices: 12, notes: "raisins, no peel" },
            { name: "Spiced loaf", price: 9, grams: 700, slices: 0, notes: "" }] }));
built.input.shelf; // the page's lines: prices, fits, verdict and pick
const wire = K.toWire(built.input);     // POST this to /estimate and /run
// then: const reply = K.normalize(K.parseReply(job.output.output));
// built.facts.verdict                  // the verdict the page's rule gives
// K.check(reply, built).notes          // the page's re-check of the reply
// K.md(built, reply, "my shortlist") // the comparison as Markdown

Step 1 — a tiny client helper

One function that sends JSON and unwraps the envelope. Paste a personal token from /tokens.html, or leave it empty and mint a guest token in step 2.

BASE="https://api.skillsafe.ai/v1/app-api"
TOKEN="paste-your-token-here"   # from https://slice-for-slice.skillsafe.ai/tokens.html
api() { # api METHOD PATH [JSON-BODY]
  curl -s -X "$1" "$BASE$2" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
    ${TOKEN:+-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN"} ${3:+--data "$3"}
}

Step 2 — a token

A guest token is enough for /me and /estimate. A run is metered, so it needs a personal token: sign in on /tokens.html and copy it from there.

# a guest token (enough for /me and /estimate); a run needs your personal token from /tokens.html
TOKEN=$(curl -s -X POST "$BASE/guest" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"slug":"slice-for-slice"}' | jq -r '.data.token')

Step 3 — GET /me

Who the token is (subject_type: user or guest) and the credit balance.

api GET /me | jq '.data | {subject_type, credits}'

Step 4 — POST /estimate

Free. The body is the run input itself, the bare object (never wrapped in {"input": ...}). hold_credits is a reservation, not the price; min_credits is what the balance must cover; model_alias reads gpt-terra.

# input.json: the run input object - {"task": "compare", "occasion": "just me and a pot of tea", "wishes": "none", "shelf": "currency: $\nbudget per cake: none\n...\nverdict: clear-pick\npick: option 2 | Lebkuchen tin\n...", "notes": "option 1 | dense, honey and almonds\noption 2 | soft spiced biscuits, some chocolate-coated"}
# - see the field table
api POST /estimate "$(cat input.json)" | jq '.data | {hold_credits, min_credits, model, model_alias, markup_bps, warnings}'

Step 5 — POST /run, then poll the job

Send an Idempotency-Key built from the lane and the input: a retry with the same key never bills twice. The page uses slice-for-slice:<task>:<inputHash>:a<attempt> (the one task is compare), and its one reformat retry (with retry_note added) is attempt 2, a new key and a second run. The job's output.output is the reply text; truncated: true means the balance cut it short.

KEY="slice-for-slice:compare:$(shasum -a 256 input.json | cut -c1-16):a1"
JOB=$(curl -s -X POST "$BASE/run" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: $KEY" --data @input.json | jq -r '.data.job_id')
while :; do
  J=$(api GET "/jobs/$JOB"); S=$(echo "$J" | jq -r '.data.status')
  case "$S" in succeeded|failed|cancelled) break;; esac; sleep 2
done
echo "$J" | jq -r '.data.output.output' > reply.json   # one JSON object, the reply contract
echo "$J" | jq '.data | {charged_credits, truncated}'

Step 6 — POST /run-stream

The same run as Server-Sent Events, with the same input.json. Browsers receive progress ticks rather than text deltas; the final done event carries the reply.

# Server-Sent Events: tick/delta events while the job runs, then a final event with the job
curl -N -s -X POST "$BASE/run-stream" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: slice-for-slice:compare:$(shasum -a 256 input.json | cut -c1-16):a1" --data @input.json
